Narrative Short written, filmed, and edited for my 2025 production III class at LSU. This was shot in a Walmart on a Canon r5c and edited within Adobe Premiere Pro. The colors were also slightly edited and brought up in Davinci Resolve.
The challenge of the assignment was to show a type of dramatic visual conflict within a 1-2 minute scene. We had to show juxtaposition through montage editing, intentional framing, mood/tone, etc. But there was one rule: No dialogue.
At the time of submission, these were my thoughts on how this short illustrated juxtaposition and dramatic visual conflict:
There were two different points of juxtaposition I was hoping to reach with this short. The first being the concept of overconsumption based on the idea of making an entire dish because of one green onion plant. What I mean by that is the main character, played by my sister, owns a green onion plant in hopes to stop relying on grocery stores and consumerism to make her own food. This backfires because the only thing she has is a green onion. So, she formulates this entire dish based off the one ingredient, that she only uses as a garnish, and is forced to give in to the idea of mass consumption by buying the rest of her ingredients at a supermarket. I conveyed this idea even further by having her hands full and having her drop what was in her hands to show this.
The second point I was trying to convey is the silliness of spending the time and money of making a 30-cent ramen packet gourmet. By going all out with a ribeye steak, boiled and marinated egg, and lots of extra ingredients, she is doing the most for such a cheap food staple.
I also intentionally relied on room tone for a lot of the audio. This further gives into the idea of the emptiness of mass consumption because of the robotic and stale sounds.
